1. Cru Cru Anoush, super nice to have the chance to chat with you again! First and foremost what got you into music?
It’s my pleasure.
My father likes to tell the story of the day I was born; when he first held me, the song “Girl” by the Beatles came on the radio. Starting from that day, music has always been a part of my life.
2. Can you describe a live show that inspired you?
I grew up in a college town where the students often performed in concerts that were open to the community. My mother took my sister and me to the classical music concerts when we were toddlers. I fell instantly in love with the piano and begged for lessons. Soon after, I was gifted a piano for my birthday from my grandmother, and I’ve been attached to it ever since.
3. How much art pop do you listen to on a daily basis?
I’ve been so consumed with making my own music lately, that I don’t listen to as much from other artists as I used to, but I very much enjoy unusual and artistic musical styles. I like the basic verse, chorus, verse, chorus, bridge, chorus structure just like everyone else, but too much of it gets a little monotonous after a while. A little change up every now and then is refreshing.
4. Do you appreciate the fantastic contemporary music?
I appreciate all kinds of music. My taste is very diverse.
5. Which pop anthem fits you the most?
“Unstoppable” by Sia
6. Which jazz records would you recommend me?
I would recommend Fats Waller. My hands are too tiny to play his crazy huge chords, but I sure love listening to his album. For most people, I think Louis Armstrong and Ella Fitzgerald define the genre. Their music will stay in style forever. I also love the fresh spin Amy Winehouse gave to jazz in her Back to Black album.
7. Who is your favorite female singer?
Whitney Houston.
8. How did you manage to get these influences of reggae in your work?
I love reggae music! When I was a little girl, around seven years old, my family went on a vacation to Jamaica. While we were there, we went to a big reggae festival. That experience changed my life! My eyes opened to a whole new culture and style of music that I never knew existed and I absolutely loved it. It sparked my interest in traveling too. We bought a bunch of reggae albums to take home and blasted it in the car. Yes, we got some funny looks from the other smaller towners, but we didn’t care. We were jammin!
Also, when Lily Allen arrived on the music scene and infused pop with hints of reggae, I was so happy. Sublime did that too. Their music is fun and we need more like that.
9. Why people should listen to your new release: "One" and what's the song that everyone has to ear no matter what?
Listen to the album if you want to experience something different, both musically and lyrically. It’s hard to pick just one song, because each is special in its own way. I’ll say “Wishing Well” since that one is very relatable.
10. Do agree with the Pigeon?
50% of the time I agree with the pigeon 100% of the time.
Review
Check out the original album by Anoush: "ONE"! While "Cherry On Top", the third track, gives me a psychedelic glam tongue and cheek that is simply impossible to resist with its rising and falling melodies, "Cantina", on the other hand, is much more bombastic! Cantina transports me to an extremely colorful dance floor where I can dance around and escape my problems through the escapism of my alternative dance moves. Then there's "Wishing Well", a track that chooses to be more sensual and gentle, displaying dreamy textures underpinned by upbeat keys. The album continues to excel in the area of nocturnal sensuality with "Progress", where we get inside the music, just like acts like A.M. or the xx. Last but not least, the record still manages to be warm, manifesting all its solar and festive power in poppy and artistic tracks like "California Daze"
