ARTIST INTERVIEW: JOSEPHINE ASSAYECH

Josephine Assayech - Mountains

(•)> Cru cru, what first got you into music?

To cut a long story short: my mother. She was the one who enrolled me in the children's choir of the St. Gallen-Cathedral-Singing-School when I was 9 and drove me to rehearsals every week, and from that day on, singing and music have always accompanied me. And for that I am really grateful to her.

(•)> Did you enjoy going to rehearsals?

Absolutely, and that for two things. Firstly I found friends for life there, who are still part of my closest circle of friends today (almost two decades later) and secondly the final applause after a successful performance, for which we had practiced for weeks, filled me with immense pride and satisfaction. Then, as now, I always find it fascinating to see how everything comes together during the rehearsal process and how it becomes this beautiful finished product, that can be enjoyed at the end.

(•)> What's the most embarassing thing you've done during a performance?

Hahah good question. I have to be honest and say that I'm always electrified during performances and try to do my best, which is why there haven't been many obvious incidents yet. The less obvious are, for example, singing performances in the choir, where I've also done the fish (because I've forgotten the words/verse), which among singers means; pretending to sing while only moving your mouth. That's one advantage of singing in a group. 😅😂

(•)> What's your favorite fish?

I don't have a specific type of favourite fish, but I would say the colored ones are absolutely beautiful.

(•)> What are your thoughts on artists doing "playback"?

My thoughts on artists doing "playback": I think about the fan's experience. If you pay money, travel there, invest time in order to see the artist, then for sure you deserve an authentic show! And authentic means live. Of course, if as an artist you experience unplanned voice-problems, then an exeption is needed. Like that, you can at least still offer a show and don't have to cancel everything.

(•)> How is your perfect day?

My perfect day starts with some sleep-in time and then a yoga-session to start relaxed into the day. After that, there should be a long and delicious breakfast, since I'm quite a foodie, who appreciates good food, followed by some get-ready-time and long music sessions, full of creative ideas.

(•)> What artist is underrated? And overrated?

I don't know about over and underrated, but for sure I have an absolute huge appretiation for the absolute musically as well as lyrically genius STROMAE. He's everything I aim to be as an artist.

(•)> What's your most controversial music opinion?

I don't know if it's that controversial, but sometime's a song is not that deep. It just gives a platform for your own interpretation and in some cases it just get's as deep as its perceived by the listener himself.

(•)> Do you agree with the Pigeon?

With/In what?

(•)> What should the Pigeon listen to tomorrow?

All of my singles that are out on Youtube as well as on some streaming-platforms :)
