Josh Jensen - Birdhouse
1. Cru cru, what first got you into music?
I have been into music since I can remember. I have vivid memories of watching the Grand Ole Opry reruns with my grandpa when I was growing up and playing his instruments around his house in a “band” with my cousins. I grew up wanting to perform my own music for people and it really originated from those early, formative days of my youth.
2. What or who is your inspiration to create music?
I have found inspiration to create music through so many things and people along the way. Ultimately, I continue to push myself to create and put my music out there because it makes me happy and fulfills my innate drive to continually express myself through my art.
3. What's your most controversial music opinion?
Write the music that you want to, not what you feel forced to.
4. Will you tell us something embarrassing about you?
I only started listening to the artist Jónsi after watching him play live a couple of weeks ago. Sure, I have listened to Sigur Ros; but not very intently. I saw Jónsi perform here at a museum in Seattle, playing music featuring videos and scents that were released at key times during the performance. The scents were disbursed throughout the crowd in various forms and were intended to bolster the olfactory experience. Following the show, the audience was encouraged to immerse themselves further by experiencing a curated art exhibit at the museum that took the viewer through the five stages of the beginning of life through the death of a plant, featuring scents at different points that were intended to invoke certain memories or feelings. It was really quite the show and now I have been listening to his music non-stop.
5. How is your perfect day?
My perfect day always includes watching or playing good music and ends with talking to a pigeon.
6. What memorable responses have you had to your work so far?
My favorite response to my recent single Birdhouse was at the Dave Matthews Band concert at the Gorge Amphitheatre in George, Washington. I had just released the single and played it at our camp and it turned into a big dance party. It made me feel so good watching people feel compelled to dance so freely to the music that I had created.
7. Do you see yourself as a music nerd?
My musical taste is so broad and all-encompassing. My favorite artists and musical taste seem to evolve on a weekly basis. But music is always something that I am so happy to dive into and learn more about it every day. When I was in high school, I remember geeking out on music so hard. But in my older age, I only have the time and mental capacity to dabble in musical geekery. I would still consider myself a music nerd, no doubt.
8. What album do you replay the most?
I don’t have any singular album that I replay the most. Music for me is constantly on rotation. But I would say that some of the albums that have recently been on repeat include: Cory Wong Live In Amsterdam with the Metropole Orkest; Chris Cornell, Higher Truth; Shubh Saran, Being Anybody Else; Lianne La Havas (self titled); Zoe Muth and the Lost High Rollers (self titled); and, Jónsi, First Light.
9. What's your favorite movie?
One of my favorite films is Vanilla Sky. I remember watching it shortly after it came out and it was such creative story line with more obscure pop culture references, including to artists such as John Coltrane. I have watched it more recently and it still has such a timeless and artistic approach to it that you don’t get to see often in a Hollywood produced film.
10. Do you agree with the Pigeon?
I disagree with the Pigeon! Just kidding, thanks for making this a perfect day.
