ARTIST INTERVIEW: STRANGELILY

1. Cru cru, what first got you into music?

Chloe: Growing up, my family listened to a lot of jazz, soul, and classical music. As soon as I got my first keyboard, I’d spend hours a day making random tunes on one of those “old school” webcams.

Tessa: I had a lot of family members who played music, my mom and my grandma were both violinists, so it was easy for me to try it out and I ended up loving it.

Wyatt: Well, a couple things really pushed me into making and loving music. Everyone in my family has always loved music across the board. I always remember one specific day as being a turning point for my love of music and it was an October when I was like 13 or 14. I had just lost a friend and that day found my dad's old collection of records. I spent the evening combing through them and pulling them out and listening to them for fun. It was a nice escape for a little bit and that's when it snapped what music could mean to me and so many other people. Ever since, I've been trying to keep music in my life in some capacity and at this point in time, it's the most it's ever been, which is nice.

Jacob: One of my earliest memories is actually sitting in my carseat in the back of my mom’s SUV singing along to Song’s About Jane by Maroon 5. Growing up, I had access to lots of instruments because my mom plays a little piano and my dad plays a little guitar.

2. What would you do if you had a time machine?

Wyatt: I would go back in time to famous figures and just fuck with em. Like nothing too damaging or anything; just like bring an iPod back to Mozart filled with nu-metal to freak him out. Hopefully in the present day then historians would be super confused when he's describing music of a future man filled with yelling and loud electric strings. Not enough damage to change the course of history, but enough to be in the annals and notes of great people.

Jacob: I want access to Crystal Pepsi. That was such a cool idea and it wasn’t around nearly long enough. All the Pepsi taste we know and love, but it doesn’t stain your teeth (or so I am told)? Sign me up.

3. What’s your favorite album of all time?

Wyatt: Since I Left You by The Avalanches; everytime I listen to it, I find something new hiding in the collage of sounds that I've never heard or noticed before. The entire methodical nature of how it was created and the idea behind finding sounds and compiling them together to make something new is so interesting.

Jacob: The first CD I ever owned was the All-American Rejects 2nd album, Move along when I was six years old. I spent so many years staring at the cover of that CD wanting to be cool like those guys. That CD is still in my car today and its still my go-to at the start of a long drive.

4. Will you tell us something embarrassing about you?

Tessa: I fell down the bleachers at my first talent show, sprained my ankle and got a little concussed, and sang the first verse twice and then just walked off the stage.

Wyatt: I passed out on stage in high school one time after having an asthma attack during a theater show.

5. What are you doing to ensure you continue to grow and develop as an artist?

Chloe: I always try to push myself by learning more challenging material, because it inspires me to try something different each time & brings out more fun and unique melodies.

Wyatt: Currently learning how to unicycle, that should ensure we maintain a constant fanbase. Plan B is balloon animals.

6. Are you a music fan?

Wyatt: Nah, this shit sucks.

Only kidding; I've been a music fan for as long as I can remember. Enjoying and listening at first, then picking up instruments to make stuff on my own and with others. Along with playing, I collect, spin, and listen to records in my free time; I've got easily 750+.

Chloe: I couldn’t imagine life without it!

7. Do you have any hobbies or interests outside of music?

Tessa: I got super into painting lil gnomes at one point.

Chloe: I’m a huge movie buff, the stranger the better. I also love reading, which inspires a lot of my lyrics.

Wyatt: I'm a big outdoorsy person; hiking, skiing, biking, backpacking, camping. On the other hand, I'm a big media person so I love reading, watching movies, and playing video and board games. Every year, I try to watch 100 movies.

8. What movie do you love the most?

Tessa: Starship Troopers - a movie about war against gigantic bugs 10/10

Wyatt: Ed Wood - really taught me that no matter how dogshit your art is, keep making it because someone out there will find it inspiring.

Chloe: Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. It absolutely wrecks me emotionally and I love it for that.

9. Who came first? The Pigeon or the egg?

Tessa: the pigeon

Wyatt: Egg. Dog, DINOSAURS hatched from eggs and they predate pigeons by millions of years.

Chloe: The pigeon fo sho

Jacob: Evolution says probably pigeons. My heart says eggs.

10. Do you agree with the Pigeon?

Tessa: I agree with all pigeons

Chloe: I agree with all pigeons, too, I wish humans would be more friendly toward them. The history of pigeons is one of my many “Roman Empires”.

Wyatt: I abstain from responding in the matter concerning 'the Pigeon' and will not continue answering these questions until my lawyer is present.

Jacob: I can’t think of a reason not to trust a bird.
