Tsunamiz - Dreamz
1. Cru cru, what first got you into music?
Music itself and my reaction to it. I really don’t have a better explanation.
As a kid I developed very early some rhythmical notions (I wouldn’t stop singing and beatboxing the instrumentals of my favorite bands) and also I started to create my own songs.
When I was 10 I got my first guitar and started learning mostly Nirvana songs and from then on till now, I have never stopped playing, composing and more recently (almost 15 years ago) I also started producing my own music.
2. What or who is your inspiration to create music?
Through out the years I have had many influences, and I still have, and it changes naturally from time to time.
Nirvana, Doors, Jimi Hendrix, Bob Marley, 2Pac, Radiohead, JPEGMAFIA, Molly Nilsson, Sleaford Mods and the list would go on…
I like everything that it’s good. I really admire independent artists that can create their own musical universe.
I’m pretty much anti-genre. People would be much happier if they would listen to whatever they like, for whatever reasons, regardless of genre and didn’t have to hide it just to please the purists and close minded individuals in their circle.
3. What's your most controverisal music opinion?
I really don’t know. I hear good things in all types of music wether it’s lyrically, melodically or production wise. I would say that I’m not particularly a fan of “comedic music”, I would exclude Weird Al Yankovic (he’s actually good and funny). In Portugal you have some artists/bands that play serious music with jokey over the top lyrics, just for the sake of it… I may appreciate it to a degree and have a laugh but it’s like a separate art form for me.
4. Will you tell us something embarassing about you?
I try to accept everything about me that I cannot change even though it’s not easy, some people like to remind me from time to time of something I should be embarrassed about myself.
If you’re talking about something that has happened to me, well, many years ago, when I was way more unprofessional, I threw up on stage, I had too much whiskey and people in the crowd were passing me joints, and while I was soloing I fell on my knees, let it all out, and went back to finish singing and playing the song. I wouldn’t even call this embarrassing, just very punk rock!
People may find something embarrassing about me, but that’s their problem…
5. How is your perfect day?
Rehearse, create some new songs, exercise, play a live show, have some drinks and make love… Put some beach or mountain in the middle of it and I wouldn’t mind repeating it for the rest of my life… (laughs)
6. What memorable responses have you had to your work so far?
One of my favorite Portuguese radios, Radar played my last album “Kultur Is Dead” for a week. Also one of my favorite artists Molly Nilsson told me recently that she loves one of my songs “We Want the World”. I just melted…
7. Do you see yourself as a music nerd?
In a way yes, I’m always listening to different styles of music and I’m always eager to learn the history of music and its different genres and movements. But there’s people that are nerdier than me…
8. What album do you replay the most?
At the moment, although I don’t listen to albums quite that ofter anymore, the album that I have replayed the most recently was Kanye West’s “My Dark Twisted Fantasy”.
9. What's your favorite movie?
I love cinema, and maybe If I wasn’t a musician and producer I would love to be a movie director. Portugal is definitely not the place to work in the movie industry, not even the music industry, I would say. It’s a small country with small circles and next to no money.
For me personally, a great movie has to have a great soundtrack, great direction and some deep themes regarding the human condition.
I will tell you now my some of my favorite movies: A Clockwork Orange, Apocalypse Now (Redux), Blade Runner (Final Cut), OldBoy, Godfather part 1 and 2, Pulp Fiction, Fight Club, Lost Highway, and the list would go on forever…
10. Do you agree with the Pigeon?
December 7th I will be presenting my new album “Behold the Man”, live at the Roterdão Club, Cais do Sodré, Lisbon. It’s gonna be lit!
Thanks for having me!
