1. Hey 9'o clock nasty, super nice to have the chance to chat with you AGAIN. How is every member doing?
Good thank you. It has been a really strange time with us moving out of our studio and having to start again but it's proven to be a really great stimulus to us to write and record new songs and find new ways to work. Because we literally lived in a recording studio before, we tended to dip in and out all the time, and the songs on By All Means Necessary are a result of that very gentle, regular approach. We would go back to a song many times before it was ready. Now we work in a more intensive way on songs and we're finding that makes us work differently and perhaps experiment a bit more. You’ll hear the change over the next few months, we have some great new material to delight, surprise and shock.
2. What’s your favorite 70’s artist?
We love a lot of 70’s artists. We veer between joyous cartoon glam rock and maudlin figures like Buckley. I think for us, it was a period of great songwriters like Carol King, and behind the scenes puppet masters like Chin & Chapman. Then the Sex Pistols kicked the doors in and everything changed. If you look at music in 1971, then 73, then 77 and 79, the change and pace of development is breathtaking.
3. What accomplishments do you see yourself achieving in the next 20 years?
If the world has 20 years left, we will dominate the most obscure corners of it. We will succeed in having Coldplay thrown off Spotify.
4. Do you consider yourselves movie fans?
Yes. Obsessively so. It isn't worth doing if you are not totally invested in it. Sydd is a Kubrick fanatic, Ted goes for high end cerebral directors like Wim Wenders, and Pete likes The Wizard of Oz.
5. What jobs have you done other than being an artist?
We have been employed in many jobs but we mostly have avoided the doing part. It would be fun to make things up, but the truth is stranger than anything we could imagine. Sydd was a teenage gravedigger.
Ted once had a job that involved destroying Aircraft windscreens by firing chickens at them. That period of his life led to his vegetarian years. Pete managed UK children’s puppet favourites The Tweenies and ensured they got paid on time. He took extreme measures with unscrupulous events bookers that tried to pay them with chocolate coins.
6. What is the biggest challenge of being an artist in 2022?
There is no challenge to being an artist in 2022, as long as you can be happy in charity shop clothing and don’t eat much. Reaching an audience is far easier, but the process of earning a living from your Art has become infinitely more difficult.
7. Can you tell us a cringe memory of yours?
Absolutely not.
8. Who is your favorite film director?
Michael Winner had 9 toilets in his house because he made so much crap. Fun fact. Kubrick would have to get a mention and Mel Brooks is without doubt one of the best directors to ever wear socks.
9. Do you listen to any 2022 albums?
The 2022 artists we most listen to are usually friends and collaborators and misfits. The Qwarks, The Margaret Hooligans, I Am The Unicorn Head, and many other fine upstarts are in our transom. They've had scorchingly good albums this year. We could add Angel Olsen, The Femigades, and the omnipresent PJ Harvey is on heavy rotation this week at Studio 9.
10. Do You Agree with the Pigeon?
Always. Except when we don't, and even then we nod.
The Pigeon added the new single to his Weekly Gems playlist on Spotify.
