1. Hey David, super nice to have the chance to chat with you. What first
got you into music?
Thanks very much for inviting me. It's an honor to be here. My grandfather played piano professionally in an orchestra. There was always a piano in the house and from an early age lessons were mandatory. When you begin early, music becomes part of your thinking.
2. What’s your favorite 70’s artist?
Elton. The Fender and Gibson crowd own singer/songwriting. He showed what you can still do with 88 keys.
3. What accomplishments do you see yourself achieving in the next 5 to
10 years?
When I wrote something insignificant a major publisher contacted me requesting first right of refusal if I was working on a novel. I had none.
The same thing happened a year ago but now they wanted me to pay to have it published if I had something--a sign of the times. They won't stop asking. I thought of putting a "No Soliciting" sign on my website but a better way of keeping them at bay is to say I am actually working on a novel, longer than anything Proust has written, and it should be ready in five to ten. Then I can quietly get back to writing another album.
4. Do you consider yourself a music fan?
That brings to mind words like die-hard and hardcore. I love nearly all types of music but do not consider myself a fan.
5. What jobs have you done other than being an artist?
Bag boy in a grocery store. Steel Foundry worker. Teacher. Financial Consultant. Freelance writer.
6. What is the biggest challenge of being an artist?
Paying the rent and wrestling the DeLorean back from the bank.
7. Can you tell us a cringe memory of yours?
In college I needed a summer job and lied my way into an opening for a
bartender. My only real experience was that I had frequented a lot of bars.
After the first night the owner came up and asked me "Where did you say
you worked again?"
8. Who is your inspiration?
As trite as it may sound my children inspire me. They teach me tolerance, unconditional love, awareness. Without them I might never have noticed the intricate genius in a fallen maple leaf glued to a piece of construction paper.
Writers like Leonard Cohen inspire me to dig much deeper with my lyrics.
9. Do you listen to podcasts?
Not usually but that in no way undercuts their importance. I am a visual person, an obsessed geek of the written word. That's the way universities programmed me.
10. Do You Agree with the Pigeon?
In general yes except for those moments on the park bench when he won't stop cooing for my hot pretzel.
The Pigeon added the new single to his Weekly Gems playlist on Spotify.
